The brewing process begins with ‘milling’ or crushing the malted barley to ‘grist’ in order to further expose the sugars needed at the end of the brew for fermentation into alcohol.  Once crushed in the mill the malt travels up an Archimedes’ Screw which has the function of scooping up the crushed malt, sliding it up a spiral tube until it reaches a hopper, known as a ‘grist case’, above the brewhouse mashtun.
